Standard refrigerator sizes
Top-freezer, bottom-freezer, French door, side-by-side: the size ranges for each, side by side.

Short answer: most full-size refrigerators are about 24 to 40 in wide, 61 to 72 in tall and 28 to 37 in deep, and can reach about 45 in deep with a door fully open.[1 · Oct 29, 2026] The type you pick moves you around inside those ranges.

Counter-depth models are about 24 to 30 in deep and standard-depth models about 30 to 37 in; counter-depth models are often a little wider and taller to make up the space.[1 · Oct 29, 2026] More in our counter-depth refrigerator guide.
Three real examples, and why the details matter
LG's install guide lists sample models of each type. They're from a 2014 document, so the models may be gone, but they show how many “depths” one fridge has:[2 · Oct 29, 2026]
| Example (type) | Width | Height to hinge | Height to case | Depth | Without handles | Without doors |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| French door | 35¾ in | 70¼ in | 68⅞ in | 37⅛ in | 34⅝ in | 30⅜ in |
| Side-by-side | 35⅜ in | 70¼ in | 69 in | 35¾ in | 33⅜ in | 28½ in |
| Top/bottom mount | 32¾ in | 68½ in | 67⅞ in | 33⅜ in | 33⅜ in | 29 in |
What capacity do I need?
- Plan on about 4 to 6 cu ft per person: about 20 cu ft suits a family of four, and larger families may want 25 cu ft or more.[1 · Oct 29, 2026]
- Rough size bands: small about 11 to 13 cu ft, medium about 14 to 21 cu ft, large about 22 to 31 cu ft or more.[1 · Oct 29, 2026]
- To estimate capacity yourself, multiply the inside length, width and depth in inches and divide by 1,728.[1 · Oct 29, 2026]
- Undercounter fridges are about 35 in tall.[1 · Oct 29, 2026]
